The 2 Bandits That Steal Your Momentum (And How to Stop Them)
Mar 25, 2025Ever feel like you're ready to take action, but something invisible holds you back?
Well, You’re not alone.
There are two sneaky bandits that steal your momentum before you even realize it-
But here’s the good news: once you identify them, you can stop them. Let’s expose these two disguised hidden fear and take back control.
Today, we’re talking about the two bandits of inaction that hold you back.
So, in The first part, I am going to explain the mapping of fear so you can understand once for all how hidden fear are underneath your everyday radar, and second we are going to talk about the two hidden fear which are the fear of loss or process paralysis, and the opportunity cost fear, and third I’ll show you how you take back control, let’s dive in.
So let’s zoom out, before we go into the details what I wanted to mention is that fear in itself is not a bad mechanism because it is designed to protect us so we can survive whenever we are in danger especially from the primitive time when facing lions in jungle where we better use our mental faculty appropriately; however with time as we evolved, psychological fear is at the root cause of holding you back in most cases, so the key is to raise your awareness because these fear are most of the time hidden fears.
That happens simply because of the following: there’s an identity, or an image on how you see yourself, your self-concept that fear helps protect at any cost; but in order to grow you will evolve into a new identity- The old “image” of you wants to keep you safe. Vs. New you that wants you to evolve.
This is where fear becomes a restriction because there’s a competing interest between the future identity of who you desire to become versus the current identity that your brain knows and try to protect. That is the secret! And more so that is why the vision and visualization process in high performance is essential because you are telling your brain who you want to become so that your brain can familiarize itself with that new image.
Now let’s dive into explicitly, the fear of loss or the paralysis element is that emotional reaction to losing something tangible as a resource (for example -money) or something intangible (which could be comfort, time, effort, reputation, etc.).
It’s basically that adage -You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore. Even though it looks like it’s fear of the unknown but really, it’s fear of process and change and it’s a dangerous one because it’s silent and hidden unless you bring it to your consciousness. For example, a want to be entrepreneur that has a steady comfortable predictable bi-weekly paycheck in his current job versus the unpredictability of an entrepreneur chasing revenue every day.
Now, the second hidden fear is the opportunity cost fear which highlights the value of what’s lost when choosing one option over another. because as you consider what you will gain you will be asking yourself about everything you are giving up which leads to doubt and inaction.
So, in both cases I hope you can clearly see now the hidden fears of both the fear of loss and the opportunity cost could lead to a decision paralysis which hinders action and initiatives.
That’s what hold you back whenever you feel like you are losing momentum in your action.
Now the way you turn this around is two steps.
First step, realize why you are hesitating to act it’s because you are second guessing and worrying if you are going to make the “wrong” decision.
Second
zoom out from the current identity, your current self-concept-
Disassociate yourself and bring it to your consciousness.
Example- the future identity you want is to lose weight and be healthier but the old image (current self-concept) is used to your old habits of just sitting down, and not wanting to diet, work out or exercise- so guess what it’s the competing interests of the two self-concept but if you don’t bring it to your awareness the old you would win all the time because you don’t have enough leverage on yourself because fear is protecting that old part of you that is used to the old habits.
