How Do You Measure Being Your Best?

applied spirit Jun 04, 2024

The reality is that Personal excellence is a journey, not a destination. It is about striving to be your best self in every aspect of life. But how do we measure something so personal and unique?

Today we will explore practical steps to gauge your personal excellence.

I will share 6 Key Performance Indicators of Being Your Best that will help you track your personal excellence moving forward. And I will share with you a perspective that is a new paradigm and balance those key performance indicators are divided into two categories- Intrinsics(internal)or Extrinsic(external).

Before jumping in, I wanted to share something personal that maybe you might relate to. It is a poem that had an impact on me, in elementary school-

Be the Best of Whatever You Are - Douglas Malloch

It starts like

“If you cannot be a pine on the top of the hill,

Be a scrub in the valley — but be.

The best little scrub by the side of the hill.

etc.…

There is something for all of us here,

If you cannot be the sun, be a star.

It is not by size that you win, or you fail —

Be the best of whatever you are!

That poem resonated with me as little child so much, that it became a compass- in everything I do- I wanted to share that because through all these years I adhered to this but what occurred to me there was no real concrete measurement on knowing if I achieve that goal and up to today with the numerous trainings I went through, I have not seen in any literature or performance training so today as I have matured and I wanted to help and make it tangible for people so they can this as a benchmark moving forward.

With that said -Let’s get started!".

Most of the time when people talk about excellence, they show the medal won, the trophy or the results but what people do not see is the excellence that went into before-

Like The GOAT (greatest of all time) Muhamed Ali used to say– “The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses – behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.”

There is a lot of truth in that saying but let me provide a methodology for anyone looking to find a way to measure being their best.

There are six key performance indicators divided into two categories- Intrinsics(internal)or Extrinsic(external).

Intrinsics

1-Intention- Fulfilling ALL that you are capable- Inherent each of us have gifts and inherent potential but we do not open the gift box because we are limited to what we see or what the environment presents. So, stay grounded in your intention- I want to reach my highest self is important. Which leads to?

2-Commitment- I will consistently show up and give my best effort, regardless of challenges or setbacks

3-Self Improvement-Learner Mindset- You are always looking for ways to improve and grow, seeking out new knowledge and skills. self-assessment. Reflect on your strengths and areas for improvement. Ask yourself questions like, ‘What am I proud of?’ and ‘Where can I grow?’ Writing down your thoughts can provide clarity."

Extrinsic

1-Preparation- Do your homework before tackling a task- exerting yourself to the fullest extent possible, given the circumstances-even if you need to, set SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying ‘I want to be healthier,’ say ‘I will jog for 30 minutes three times a week for the next three months.’ This makes your goal clear and trackable."

2-Focus- Doing Your Best You maintain focus and concentration, avoiding unnecessary distractions (Doing Your Best: Focuses on the effort exerted in a given situation-useful in situations where flexibility or adaptability is important)

3-Efficiency- Giving Your Best You use your time and resources effectively to maximize productivity- Tracking your progress is essential. Use tools like planners, apps, or journals to monitor your achievements and setbacks. Regularly review your goals and adjust them as needed. Feedback is a valuable part of measuring personal excellence. Ask trusted friends, mentors, or colleagues for their honest input. They can provide perspectives you might not see and help you grow.

(Giving Your Best- Highlights commitment and dedication to achieving a specific outcome or goal- meeting deadlines, achieving set benchmarks in contexts where there is a specific goal or outcome to achieve)-

The secret is Self-Compassion: Recognize that doing your best does not mean being perfect. Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them without harsh self-criticism.

These are the 6 key performance indicators, and If you measure yourself and score yourself, I guarantee you will know whether you are being your best and here are two secrets highly important I want to share because you will be able to validate and test it in the long run.

There are two elements that will allow you to evaluate: Your Contribution and Impact

On the Impact side it will come first with personal fulfillment

You experience a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction from living in alignment with your values and making a positive impact in the world (Alignment with Purpose and Passion)-Sense of Purpose: You have a sense of purpose and meaning in your life, driven by passions, interests, and values that inspire and motivate you.

Alignment: Your actions and choices are aligned with your sense of purpose, leading to a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in your endeavor

The second element that will allow you to validate is having a purposeful contribution and why?

Because your path to growth is in service to something bigger than yourself.

You actively seek opportunities to contribute positively to the lives of others, your community, or society, using your talents and resources to make a meaningful difference.

By being your best, you are honoring the authentic divine self in you, because you are fulfilling all that you are capable of, all your potential.

Doing your best, giving your best and being your best is something divine.

It is transforming!

Start today and keep striving to be the best version of yourself.
