If you are a high performer or an aspiring high achiever, it’s critical to understand why you want to incorporate this practice as an integral aspect of your daily habits.
Today, our Topic focuses on How Gratitude Can Be a Performance Enhancer and you want to understand why the great masters in all cultures have revered this magic potion and I can promise you that if you understand and apply what I am going to share your performance will soar so will your results, your impact and fulfillment.
How do I know?
Because by the end of this perspective, you will understand the potent power gratitude and how it positively influences the three dimensions of performance at the same time; the mental, emotional, and physical dimensions, which are critical for achieving peak performance and if you stay tuned till the end, we’ll explore its power and impact in the spirit dimension.
So, here’s today’s roadmap.
In the first part, I’ll share with you the proven scientific practical effects that gratitude produces in your physical dimension starting with your brain optimization, to the production of neurotransmitters and all the way to the increase of your well-being.
In the second part, I’ll share why it’s beneficial to be intentional in gratitude practices and we’ll see the different applications and positive effects whether you are an athlete or a team leader or just wanting to improve and create a breakthrough in your life.
In the third part, I’ll provide you practical framework you can use to establish new gratitude habits and
finally in the last part, which is my favorite, we’ll dive into the insights from the spirit performance coaching vantage point which will give you an anchor to elevate your game and create that meaningful impact you desire.
Ready? Let’s jump in
So, In the first part for the skeptics out there, Gratitude isn't just a feel-good emotion.
Numerous scientific research demonstrated that gratitude induced state changes the brain.
To start, specifically, in the mental dimension –
Gratitude states activates the Brain's Reward System (or the motivation and satisfaction molecule)- it stimulates the release of dopamine, the brain's "feel-good" neurotransmitter, which enhances mood and motivation.
In the emotional dimension, gratitude enhances emotional regulation and well-being at many levels, first.
- By strengthening neural network connections in the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and managing emotion which improves your ability to respond to challenges with resilience and optimism.
- The second benefit validated is that gratitude practice lowers levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, reducing the brain's stress response and also
It activates the hypothalamus, which regulates stress and emotional responses, promoting a sense of calm.
So, the by product is that at the emotional level is that gratitude reduces stress and anxiety and ultimately It promotes resilience because it helps people cope better with stress and adversity.
Now on the physical dimension, gratitude helps with health improvement.
- Practicing gratitude helps improves the quality of sleep-
How is it so?
By increasing the neurotransmitter serotonin production, and so with a relaxed mind, the act of reflecting on positive experiences helps quiet the mind, which reduces insomnia and racing thoughts; all that help lower blood pressure and improved overall health.
Okay -Now that we just looked at the facts,
We can move on to the second part which gives us explicitly the perspective of why practicing gratitude enhances performance whether you are an athlete, a leader or someone trying to improve their life.
The guiding principle is simple “what you focus on flourishes.”
So- let’s be clear gratitude boosts focus and motivation.
By shifting your attention from negative distractions to positive opportunities, by increasing your focus on your goals or by appreciating progress and the support of others, which leads you to sustain intrinsic motivation, which drives consistency and sustained effort.
Performance enhancement in the mental realm is manifested by an improvement in your mental clarity and creativity.
How so?
Because a grateful mindset reduces mental clutter, allowing for sharper decision-making and problem-solving. Quite simply with a positive mindset gratitude opens the brain to new ideas and innovative solutions.
Now as you guessed, mental performance enhancement is reflected at the emotional level as well starting with emotional resilience and explicitly to add gratitude boost confidence and self-agency because by recognizing and appreciating past successes you are able to cultivate a sense of competence and self-belief and even beyond that it allows you to defeat imposter syndrome by shifting focus to strengths and contributions.
On the physical dimensions of performance optimization, by building habits of practicing gratitude what it is happening is that you are boosting your mental health by reducing activity in the amygdala, the brain's fear center, the effect is to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety and at a higher level you are improving your brain's ability to form new neural connections which is at the basis of creating new habits what the neuroscientist call neuroplasticity, in that it rewires the brain to focus more on positive experiences, making gratitude a self-reinforcing habit.
Ultimately on the physical level your performance improvement is reflected by physical well-being and increase in energy.
How?
Simply with improved sleep quality, you get better recovery, which are both critical for sustained physical and mental performance and it boosts your overall energy levels.
Now, the added bonus is the following especially if you are a leader or in a community, it is that gratitude promotes social connection because it enhances activity in the brain part called anterior cingulate cortex, which is linked to empathy and understanding others' emotions. So yes, expressing gratitude strengthens bonds and fosters deeper connections with others for stronger interpersonal relationships and feelings of social belonging.
As a team leader the more you practice gratitude within your team, the more you will inspire loyalty and engagement, by creating a culture of mutual respect and high performance, because expressing gratitude strengthens trust and collaboration within teams, essential for effective teamwork.
So, without a doubt expressing gratitude improves relationships and team dynamics.
So, I really wanted to keep this short but the next two sections are important and I need to address them.
Especially, in this third part we want to provide you practical tools so you can be equipped with building your own practices and gratitude habits.
What are some of the best and quickest ways for you to develop and build new practices in your daily experiences?
You can be grateful for People, Experiences, Things.
So, just think about the acronym PET.
“P” for People- (friends, family, colleague, partners, clients)- In your direct circle who has impacted you today that you can acknowledged. It’s important because gratitude that is not expressed would not be carried out. So, make it a habit to acknowledge the people who make contributions to your life on a daily basis.
“E” for Experiences reflects on what happened today(good/bad) and what experiences could you be grateful for-Any experiences that allowed you to gain more wisdom, or deeper insights?
“T” for Things, what did you gain, or lost, or let go that gave you more wisdom and more depth that you could be grateful for. Or is it acknowledging the park, the environment by which you are surrounded.
So yes, PET framework,
For P-send that message to people in the evening or first thing in the morning or lunch break- it has to be shared.
And For Experiences and Things, if you prefer journaling or reflecting or meditating just connect to those elements and the key is that it has to be at least in two dimensions (mental and emotional) thought and emotions.
This leads me to the last part that I wanted to share which is in the spirit and principle dimension because Gratitude is more than an emotion—it is a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.
By cultivating gratitude, you align yourself with the flow of vital energy, which deepen your spiritual awareness, and create a harmonious connection from your authentic inner self with the universe at large. a sense of peace, which helps with a sense of abundance, and purpose that transcends the material world.
So, that alignment activates your drive and meaning in performance contexts, which creates a powerful internal compass, particularly because it connects you in your daily efforts to your “why,” your purpose.
So, what happens is that in spirit or principle dimension, you are aligning yourself with higher vibrations of love, joy, and abundance.
As you raise your energetic frequency, you are able to acknowledge the interdependence of all things and therefore to activate a sense of humility and openness which of course allow you to align more closely with your true spiritual essence and purpose.
By appreciating what you have, you create space for even greater blessings to flow into your life. What you focus on flourishes.
